Recovering
As can be expected, this week is scheduled to be a recovery week, however, I am still trying to get a few quality workouts in the pool and one on the bike, namely, a long aerobic ride this weekend. Monday after the race my calves were very sore and so I scheduled a massage for yesterday. It was a good experience and I was able to get some good advice about how to reduce the amount of soreness in my calves. Now, I’m not going to schedule a massage after every race or once a month, it’s far to expensive for that but maybe if I’m feeling particularly sore or stressed I may treat myself. Then again, that $65 is one week’s worth of groceries and pretty close to a pair of new shoes. And despite it being a “recovery” week, I’ve already put in 3.5hrs so far, with another 2 planned for today. Monday I had a solid swim and yesterday was a bike and the massage, which I counted towards flexibility. So maybe in reality, I’ve only put in 2.5hrs including this morning’s 4M hobble around the park. Here’s how it’s turned out.

Sore but very satisfied
**I’ve moved my CV under the About Me page to better update my stats**
It wasn’t the best preparation or pre-race training, but I am very pleased with the outcome: 2:45:45 and 5th overall. I even managed to run a negative split by about a minute, which was good considering the wind and heat both picked up as the race went on. My knee didn’t bother me, though both of my inner quads were pretty achy for most of the race. I suppose that comes with the territory, but it reminded me of something I heard Dick Beardsley say at a conference I went to when I was in undergrad and it really stuck. When talking about his training or racing, he mentioned that pain or discomfort is inevitable. The trick is to monitor it and ask yourself, “ok, this hurts, but has it gotten worse?” throughout the event. I used that mantra (along with “glide, relax, breathe”) today and I think it helped me turn in a good time. The race went well and I was fortunate to get 2 GU’s along the course from my local training group around miles 17 and 21, which was crucial to my ability to sustain the effort I was putting out. I achieved almost all of my performance goals for the race: establish a new PR, run sub-2:50 (right around 2:45), and place in the Top 10, Top 5 would be a stretch. To put things in context, let me give a quick run-down of my training since the 30K about a month ago. Read the rest of this entry »

What do you jam to?
I finally decided to take it easy today and just did 30′ easy, or about 4M’s. I iced the knee when I was done and ate a late breakfast. Afterwards I went to volunteer to teach at a church but there wasn’t a real high turnout (perhaps due to the gloomy weather) so I didn’t get to teach. Oh well, maybe next time. Then I came home, had lunch and took an hour and half nap, followed by church since I’d miss it tomorrow morning due to the race. And I just got back from studying for 3hrs, had dinner, and getting ready for bed. Not in the mood to wax philosophic about the race but I’m sure I’ll have something to say about it tomorrow. However, while running around the park this morning, I noticed an increased of people working out with headphones on.

Taper? I don’t need to taper, right?
Tomorrow I’ll taper. I promise. Just a nice 30′ run and maybe 2500m easy in the pool. And possibly a 1hr recovery bike for kicks. The last couple of days have been solid workout days, which is good. And I’m not really stressing out about the marathon because in the context of the season, it was only a distraction for Nov-Feb. After a nice recovery week, I’ll be able to ramp up my intensity to get ready for St. Anthony’s at the end of April. I’ve managed to put in 8hrs15′ the past 3 days (3/2.25/3hrs) and I feel pretty good. Hopefully my legs will be ready on Sunday and my knee will keep quiet. Not much going on at the expo today. Just picked up my race chip and number. The t-shirts aren’t all that attractive and I was disappointed with the clothing/shoes. Usually I’m able to snag a deal on a pair of shoes or shorts but nothing doing today. Apparently they were at another race a week ago and when you’re a size 8.5 shoe and medium short, your sizes run out fast, no pun intended. Oh well. Another long bike today with a swim and lift in the evening.
